Zenith Bank Plc has inked a Memorandum of Understanding( MoU) with the African Continental Free Trade Area( AfCFTA) Secretariat for the development of the SMARTAfCFTA Portal, for trade creation within the African mainland. The SMARTAfCFTA Portal, which has the capacity to give information like trade pointers, request trends, custom tariffs, trade agreements, rules of origin, request access conditions of applicable authorities, import capabilities, import diversification pointers and contact details of business mates in target requests and other trade- related information about Africa, will help to unleash the vast openings for trade on the African mainland. The MoU was inked by the Group Managing Director/ CEO of Zenith Bank Plc,Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu and the Secretary- General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, His Excellency Wamkele Mene, during the 8th Annual Edition of the Zenith Bank International Trade forum onNon-Oil Export themed “ NigerianNon-Oil Export Industry The Present, The unborn “, held on Wednesday, August 8, 2023, at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos and nearly. Speaking on the cooperation with AfCFTA for the development of the SMARTAfCFTA Portal, the Group Managing Director/ CEO of Zenith Bank,Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, said “ This collaboration aims to unleash the vast openings presented by AfCFTA not only for Nigeria’s profitable substance but also for advancing trade across African countries ”. Onyeagwu noted the crucial part that the periodic Zenith Bank Trade forum plays in heightening the discussion on promotingnon-oil import in Nigeria by bringing togethernon-oil import interpreters and applicable government agencies to interact and explore the openings and proffer results to the challenges ofnon-oil import in the country, noting that former editions ’ issues have set up expression and told policy enterprise. For case, the extension of the period of extradition ofNon-Oil Export proceeds from 90 days to 180 days, and the policy calling shippers not to carry import without a Nigeria Export Proceeds( NXP) Form Number were recommendations from former forums . Also, the need to incentivise exporters to repudiate their import proceeds through the sanctioned channels and the recommendation to produce import outstations across colorful import capitals in the country were also from once forums . Also, former editions recommended having Export divisions in marketable banks, which has now been introduced. In his keynote address at the Zenith Bank International Trade forum, the Secretary- General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, His Excellency Wamkele Mene, thanked the Author and president of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for partnering with the AfCFTA for the development of the SMARTAfCFTA Portal. In his words “ Zenith Bank was the first bank to say “ we want to mate with you ”. We went to see the Author and Chairman, and he said that Zenith Bank wants to make a donation to digitise trade in Africa. And so the gate wasn't my idea, it wasn't our idea at the AfCTA Secretariat, it was Zenith Bank that stepped up and said, ‘ this has to be done! ’. So I want to thank you veritably much, GMD for this collaboration. ” In his goodwill communication,Dr. Kingsley Obiora, the Deputy Governor of Economic Policy representing the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, confided Zenith Bank for leading Nigeria’snon-oil import creation advocacy. He bemoaned the1.2 per centnon-oil import to total GDP rate and emphasised the need for combined sweats to boostnon-oil exports in Nigeria. Zenith Bank launched theNon-Oil Export Seminar in 2016 as an action to consolidate the converse on promoting thenon-oil import business in Nigeria. The 2023 International Trade Seminar also featured a goodwill communication from the Secretary of the National Action Committee on AfCFTA,Mr. Olusegun Awolowo.
